ENTRY LEVEL TEST GUIDE

Note: We need to be more acquainted with basic information about our potential students. Remember that every level test you do is an opportunity for the company to gain more business so we must be careful at the same time conscientious in administering the test.

1. Acquire the following information upon administering the exam:

1. Full name/ Korean name and English name if any

2. Age (confirm if it is Korean age.)

3. Occupation, hobbies and interests

4. Contact information (telephone number/ mobile phone numbers and email address)

5. Available and preferred time for classes.

2. Ask your potential student if she can use the computer while having the level test. This information will help you determine how the class would be conducted.

3. Proceed to the test proper and rate the student based on the metrics we have on the level test page of the website.

4. Instructor may assist the potential client with clues, examples on areas that will prove too challenging for him. Also be prepared to give the meaning of the word. Otherwise, just give them the answer and provide them an example of the word in a sentence, before moving on to the next word or challenge. Listening ability of the student will be based on his ability to comprehend instructions of the teacher.

Test 1: Pronunciation skills

The test is administered so that the teachers will have a firm recognition of the student’s pronunciation capabilities.

Directions: The teacher will spell word for the student and he in turn will pronounce it.

Beginner
Intermediate
Advanced
Walk(COMMENT) Garage (ge) (COMMENT) Voyage (v/ a/ ge) (COMMENT)
Vase (COMMENT) Church (ch) (COMMENT) Faithful (f/th) (COMMENT)
Flower(COMMENT) Reference (r/f/ce) (COMMENT) Reliable (r/l/ia) (COMMENT)
Fruit (COMMENT) Thief (th/f) (COMMENT) Razor (r/a/z) (COMMENT)
Garbage(COMMENT) Vanished (v/ sh/ ed) (COMMENT) International (COMMENT) (linking/nt/word stress)

Note: It is important that we assess and give comments after finishing each category of the level test. Through this, we can immediately and clearly communicate his need to study on this particular area.

If the student makes a mistake about the pronunciation of a word, try to explain to the student about the correct pronunciation of that word and tell him that it’s a common mistake among Koreans. Thus, tell him that he has to study up and improve himself on this particular area, e.g. the pronunciation of words ending with GE, CH, SH, L, R, etc. and words starting with f,p,v,b,l,r etc. So, even if the student doesn’t get the pronunciation of word immediately, you tell him that it is ok for now but you have to emphasize that he has to communicate to him clearly his need to study hard about the right pronunciation of sounds and the need to practice hard. Tell him that MEP can help him about that.

We have to be clear about the difference of pronunciation and accent/intonation patterns, you can also tell him, especially the advanced students, that even his pronunciation is understandable and clear, he still has to improve on intonation patterns (which is one of the greatest weaknesses of many ESL students) e.g. stressing of words, linking of sounds, etc., to increase his competency in speaking.

The student will give the synonym for the following words

Note: It is not important that all the words are tackled in the test. You can just pick up some of the words and get some idea about his level. Remember, we have to be conscious about the time that we spend. If the student doesn’t get the synonyms/antonyms of the words, tell the answers and explain to him the need to study in this particular area. You have to tell him the relevance of studying vocabulary.

You can also inform him about the importance to familiarize himself with idiomatic expressions and slang. Tell him that through this, he can be more confident in speaking with native speakers.

Test III: GRAMMAR TEST

Directions: Students must make sentences based on these words:

Beginner

Note: It is not necessary that all the words are used in this part of the test. You can just pick up some of the words and have an idea about his level.

Here, the teacher can demonstrate her ability to teach grammar. After, giving the sentences with the words, correct them and explain why they are grammatically wrong. Based on your conversation and the sentences he gave, assess what particular areas for improvement he has in grammar, e.g. the use of verb tenses (whether past tense, simple, present continuous, past modals), the use of “the”, “a”, the use of transitional words, etc.
